AI Agent for WhatsApp: The 3 Options and Which to Choose

AI agent for WhatsApp: why the app's built-in AI falls short, when no-code tools are enough and when a custom-coded agent is worth the investment.

An AI agent for WhatsApp is an assistant that chats with customers in plain language and gets tasks done, like answering questions, booking appointments or logging orders. There are three ways to get one: WhatsApp Business's built-in AI, which is quite limited; no-code tools (built by dragging blocks), a middle ground; and a custom-coded agent, the most complete.

If your company's WhatsApp has turned into a queue of "is this in stock?", "what are your hours?" and "how much is it?", and someone on your team spends the day answering the same thing, this post is for you. Below: what an agent does, how far each option goes, what it costs piece by piece and how to choose.

What can an AI agent do on WhatsApp that a menu chatbot can't?

A menu chatbot follows buttons and a fixed script; an AI agent understands the sentence the customer wrote, looks up the information and takes action. In other words, an agent is an AI assistant that answers and also gets tasks done.

Anyone who has used a menu chatbot knows the problem: if the customer types anything outside the "1, 2 or 3" options, the conversation gets stuck. An agent handles this better because it interprets the request instead of waiting for a number.

Menu chatbot AI agent
How it understands the customer Only through buttons and expected keywords Understands free-form sentences, typos and all
When the question goes off script Repeats the menu or gets stuck Looks for the answer in the company's knowledge base
Gets tasks done Rarely Checks the calendar, logs orders, fills in spreadsheets
Hands off to a human When the customer picks the "talk to a person" option When it realizes it doesn't know or the case is sensitive

Does WhatsApp Business's own AI work for your business?

For most businesses, it does little. On February 24, 2026, Meta launched in Brazil an AI inside WhatsApp Business that answers customers 24 hours a day and recommends catalog items, according to Forbes Brasil (in Portuguese). When needed, it hands the conversation over to a human agent, as Canaltech (in Portuguese) reports.

In that Brazilian launch, the app has to be set to Portuguese and the business needs at least one item in its catalog. You turn it on in the Tools menu, under the option "IA para empresas" (AI for businesses), also according to Canaltech. The sources we checked don't say whether the feature is free or paid, so check in your own app.

The same sources say you can customize it with your language and business information. But they say nothing about it checking your calendar, your inventory or your systems, logging orders or remembering each customer's history.

In our assessment, it works like a front-counter clerk who knows the catalog and whatever you entered: helpful, but not enough for a business whose customer service depends on other systems.

What are the 3 ways to get an AI agent on WhatsApp?

They are WhatsApp Business's built-in AI, no-code tools and a custom-coded agent. The difference is how far each one can go. The table combines what the sources describe with our assessment:

WhatsApp Business built-in AI No-code tools Custom-coded agent
What it does Answers questions and shows the catalog Answers and handles the tasks the tool allows Answers and handles the tasks you define, connected to your systems
Talks to your systems (calendar, inventory, CRM, your customer and sales system) Not mentioned in the sources With the ones the tool already connects to (ready-made connector) With any system that offers a way to integrate
Follows your business rules Only what the app lets you customize Simple rules Detailed rules, with the exceptions you define
Control over data and costs Set by Meta Set by the platform Greater: your company chooses where conversations are stored and which AI model to use (messages through the API follow Meta's rate card)
Best for Testing the idea Getting started and validating Customer service that is core to the business

No-code tools, like n8n (a visual automation tool), are a good start: you can build an agent that answers and logs orders in a spreadsheet without writing code. The limits show up when the rules get complex, when you need to connect many systems or when conversation volume grows and, on plans billed per execution, the cost grows with it.

A custom-coded agent is written in code for your business. It talks to any system that offers a way to integrate, follows your rules, exceptions included, keeps each customer's history and leaves the data under your company's control. It does everything the other two do and more, and it's what Nocodeia builds: custom AI agents, delivered in weeks.

Which customer service tasks can you hand off to an AI agent?

You can hand off the repetitive ones, with a known answer and a clear rule. The most common in small and midsize businesses:

  • FAQs: opening hours, address, list prices, delivery times.
  • Catalog: sending photos and options when the customer asks "what do you have in X?".
  • Scheduling: the clinic booking appointments, the salon booking slots, the auto repair shop booking a service.
  • Orders and quotes: the bakery taking a cake order and logging it in a spreadsheet, with name, date and flavor.
  • Lead qualification: the firm that asks about the type of service and the size of the client before passing them to a salesperson.
  • Human alert: when the customer complains, asks for a discount or asks something the agent can't answer.

Based on the sources, the built-in AI covers the first two; the others aren't mentioned. From the third one on, the agent needs to talk to the company's calendar, spreadsheet or CRM (the customer and sales system).

How much does an AI agent on WhatsApp cost?

The cost has three parts, and every business combines them differently. That's why you should be wary of anyone who quotes a fixed price without understanding your customer service.

  1. The messages. If the agent uses WhatsApp's official platform (the so-called API, the entry point that lets systems talk to WhatsApp), Meta charges per delivered message, with rates that vary by country and message type. Service messages and utility messages sent in response to the customer are not charged, according to WhatsApp's official pricing page.
  2. The tool or the infrastructure. With no-code, it's the platform subscription, which usually goes up with the number of executions. With a coded agent, it's the server and the AI model it uses.
  3. The setup. With the built-in AI, you configure it yourself. With no-code, you or someone else builds it. With a coded agent, a team develops, tests and fine-tunes it with you.

To estimate the first part, run the numbers yourself: how many marketing messages you send per month times the rate for your category. If your WhatsApp is almost all customer service, this part tends to be small.

How do you build your first agent, step by step?

You can build it in five steps, as the Exame guide (in Portuguese) on no-code agents shows. Steps 1, 2, 3 and 5 apply to all three options; step 4 requires a no-code tool or a coded agent:

  1. Define what the agent answers. List the 10 questions your team gets most often. That's the initial scope.
  2. Feed the agent the information. Price list, hours, return policy, catalog. Wrong information here becomes a wrong answer there.
  3. Choose where it works. Only on WhatsApp? On your website too? On which number?
  4. Give it actions. Checking the calendar, logging the order in the spreadsheet, alerting the salesperson.
  5. Test before going live. Talk to the agent like a difficult customer would. Try to confuse it.

At Nocodeia, we build custom-coded agents, and the process starts before step 1: a free 45-minute consultation to understand your customer service, then a scope with a fixed price and timeline, and delivery usually takes 2 to 4 weeks.

We've built agents like Proacta CRM's LinkedIn prospecting agent and Amore Totale's content agents (see the projects we've delivered), and the mistakes we see most are always the same:

  • Outdated knowledge base. The price changed and nobody told the agent.
  • No rule for when to bring in a human. The agent keeps pushing a conversation it can't resolve, and the customer gives up.

How should you protect customer data?

The agent talks to people and stores what they write, so data protection law applies to it just as it does to the rest of your business (in Brazil, that's the LGPD, the General Data Protection Law). The basic precautions:

  • Collect only what you need. If booking only takes a name and a time, don't ask for an ID number.
  • Be transparent. Tell the customer they're talking to an AI.
  • Keep AI away from sensitive topics. Health, financial data and serious complaints go to a human.
  • Know where conversations are stored and who can access them. With a custom-coded agent, that decision belongs to your company.

In Brazil, the official reference on the subject is the National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) (in Portuguese).

When is an AI agent not worth it?

It's not worth it when message volume is low, when every sale depends on case-by-case negotiation or when information changes daily and nobody has time to update the agent. If you get ten messages a day and answer them all calmly, a good set of quick replies in WhatsApp Business itself does the job. The agent starts paying for itself when the queue of repeated messages starts stealing hours from your team.

FAQ

Does WhatsApp Business have AI?

Yes, but it's limited. Since February 2026, WhatsApp Business in Brazil has offered an AI that answers customers, recommends catalog items and, when needed, hands the conversation over to a human. It requires the app to be set to Portuguese and at least one item in the catalog.

Is an AI agent for WhatsApp free?

It depends on the part. On WhatsApp's official platform, service messages sent in response to the customer are not charged, but the tool or infrastructure that runs the agent and the setup do cost money. The sources we checked don't say whether WhatsApp Business's built-in AI is paid; check in your app.

How do you turn on the AI agent in WhatsApp Business?

In the WhatsApp Business app, open the Tools menu and look for the option "IA para empresas" (AI for businesses), as launched in Brazil. The app has to be set to Portuguese and the catalog needs at least one item.

Can you build an AI agent for WhatsApp with n8n?

Yes, and it's a good way to start. n8n is a visual automation tool where you connect WhatsApp to an AI model, spreadsheets and calendars by dragging blocks. When the rules get complex or volume grows, a custom-coded agent goes further.
